Haverhill Ottaviani Invitational

Girls

Briana Danis is clearly going to be a story for the season in the discus. At the last meet against BG, Briana tied her own school record from last year. She launched a new school record in Haverhill, 133′-0.00″, well past her old mark of 127′-5.00″. She is yards beyond anything Pinkerton has ever seen. Michael Muldoon of the Eagle Tribune noted that’s No. 2 all time for the area covered by that paper, just 2 in. behind Salem’s Amy Desrosiers in 2011. So, parents, athletes: that’s a seriously good and rare thing Briana has got going on so take some time at the next meet to watch her let it fly.

Jordan Wheaton also got into the record lists again in the 100mHH. She set a new personal best of 15.58 in the finals, still No. 4 all time but now at No. 3 for all juniors, displacing Maria Virga ’17. Maria’s senior effort is No. 2 all time and she went on to compete–and compete well–at UNH.

There is talent on that 4x100m team, and I’m curious to see what Jordan Wheaton, Eva Roberts, Madi Connors, and Hannah Sippel can do. They were beaten only by the Cambridge Rindge & Latin quartet. The 4x800m team is also shaping up nicely with Tess Silva, Olivia Welch, Makenna Alden, and Isabelle Groulx.

Boys

Luke Brennan took first in the 2 Mile at 9:51.67. His early season effort puts him at No. 4 all time. Of course, the Astros don’t run the 2 Mile often, but we see it at the Massachusetts invites. Luke joins my ten-year old list of Nico Sevilla ’16 (9:40.98), Pat Bastek ’17 (9:47.97), Jeff Reddy ’16 (9:48.05), Tom Hanlon ’16 (9:52.85) in the 5-spot. I checked an old packet that has John Stanley ’94 running 9:44.5 so I should probably add that. Also, that 2016 squad was pretty good.

Considering how early it is in the year, keep an eye on Alexander LeBlanc and his 200m, which he finished in 23.24 while taking 2nd place.

Similarly, watch James Melendy (44′-1.00″) and George Nigro (41′-2.50″) in the shot put.

Always nice to see a relay win: nice work by Matt Devine, Alexander LeBlanc, Zackary Smith, and Jacob Spezzaferri in the 4x100m at 44.54.

Sorry, I found those old results and had to share. Handwritten, top 6 only, and all hand times. There are some seriously fast and strong people from that boys meet, including a 4:21.9 early season mile dual with John Mortimer and Matt Downin ’95!
